- Smart Net zero City (SSNC) with carbon neutrality, affordability and safety -
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President and CEO Whang Joo-ho, hereinafter referred to as KHNP) on the 24th (Wednesday) showcased a carbon-neutral solution for cities using small modular reactors (SMR) at the 2024 Korea Nuclear Power Annual Conference being held at BEXCO in Busan under the theme of “Nuclear Power Together, the Way to Overcome the Climate Crisis.”
Whang Joo-ho proposed the SMR Smart Net zero City (SSNC), which utilizes SMR as a carbon-neutral solution. SSNC is a type of city that economically and stably supplies eco-friendly, carbon-free energy through linkage with renewable energy such as solar and wind power centered on innovative SMRs. The CEO emphasized, “The SSNC in which SMR will be the main energy source is a carbon-neutral city. Futhermore, it is also expected to drastically reduce energy consumption costs by up to 30%.”
KHNP made a business agreement with Gyeongju City to create the SMR National industrial Complex and develop SSNCs on the same day. Through the agreement, the two organizations agreed to actively cooperate in the creation of the SMR National industrial Complex near east side of Gyeongju IC in Munmudaewang-myeon, Gyeonju-city, and the development of an optimal SSNC business model.
"Achieving carbon neutrality in cities will be the beginning of a long and challenging road to global carbon neutrality." said Whang, adding that "KHNP is at the forefront of the global journey to carbon neutrality, and we want to create a sustainable planet for future generations.".
